ObamaCare: Simplified Health Insurance For All Americans

Obamacare is what is known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. This is a set of health insurance and industry reforms passed into law by Congress and signed by President Obama in March 2010.

Obamacare has immensely increased the number of people with health insurance coverage. This was done by revamping individual insurance market which is where people can purchase their own policies.

Obamacare goes beyond expanding health insurance coverage. The law cut across nearly the entire American industry. It affects hospitals and doctors, restaurants and even ice cream sellers. Obamacare includes lots of policies that change the way doctors get paid, with the aim of reducing the ever-growing cost of health care.

Since the day the bill was passed, the Act has been contentious. There have been discordant tunes about Obamacare. There have been more than 50 votes in the House of Representatives to abolish it and there are also multiple Supreme Court cases to overturn or stop it. Despite all these challenges, Obamacare is still in place.

What does Obamacare do?

Obamacare covers two major things:

·       Expand access to health insurance

·       Change the way the federal government pays doctors.

In the next 10 years, it is estimated that 25 million people will gain health coverage due to Obamacare. And over 17 million people have been insured since its expansion begun in 2014.

The number of people insured is rising because of three key provisions found in the Act.

1.   Medicaid has increased greatly. Medicaid is a federal government program that provides health coverage to America’s low-income earners.

2.   The creation of insurance exchange such as online portals which includes https://healthcare.gov which is where Americans can get coverage with financial help from the federal government.

The individual mandate: This is a requirement in the Act that nearly all Americans must carry health insurance or pay a penalty. The penalty is made to encourage people to take advantage of the Act
